The secret of a mushroom-friendly fuels could benefit the environmentBy Marcia WoodNovember 29, 2005 logs felled in the forest would make a perfect home for Shiitake mushrooms. These fungi - sold as a delicacy in the produce section at the supermarket - thrive on the demolished wood, turning it into sugars that they use for food. Now, scientists at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS ) in California are studying ways to use the talents of delicious mushroom indoors. And, as afirst step in doing this, scientists have discovered and copied the gene that plays an essential role in the ability to dissolve wood Shiitake. The gene, called Xyn11A, provides instructions that the mushroom uses to produce an enzyme known as xinalasa. Researchers want to see if an improved version of the gene could digest rice hulls or other harvest leftovers. If enzymes can do that quickly and effectively in large tanks called fermenters, at biorefineries, they could make ethanol and other products a practical alternative fuel today's petroleum based, for example. That's according to Charles C. Lee, a chemist with ARS. With colleagues, Lee isolated and tested for the gene Xyn11A, the first of its kind found in Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes). Lee did the work with chemist Dominic WAS Wong and chemical engineer George H. Robertson. Scientists working in the Research Center Western Regional ARS Albany, California. In laboratory experiments, they transferred the gene Xyn11A to yeast. Equipped with the gene, the yeast could produce xinalasa. In nature, the yeast normally can not do that. The researchers described their work earlier this year in ' Protein Journal "(Journal of Protein). The
